Discover Lucky Bamboo Restaurant

Walking into Lucky Bamboo Restaurant feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where the staff already knows what you might order. Located at 807 Buffalo St, Manitowoc, WI 54220, United States, this diner-style Chinese restaurant has built a loyal following over the years, and after several visits of my own, it’s easy to see why locals keep coming back. The place doesn’t try to be flashy. Instead, it focuses on consistency, generous portions, and food that actually tastes like something you’d crave again the next day.

One of the first things you notice is how approachable the menu is. It covers all the Chinese-American staples-General Tso’s chicken, sweet and sour pork, lo mein, fried rice, and hearty soups-while still offering a few house specialties that regulars swear by. During a recent weekday lunch, I ordered their sesame chicken combo, which came out in under ten minutes. The chicken was crisp without being greasy, and the sauce had a balance of sweetness and bite that didn’t overwhelm the dish. That kind of balance matters. According to food science research published by the Institute of Food Technologists, diners tend to rate meals higher when sweet, salty, and umami flavors are evenly layered rather than dominant, and Lucky Bamboo clearly understands that in practice.

Portion size is another reason the restaurant earns strong reviews. A single entrée can easily stretch into two meals, which is something families and students in Manitowoc appreciate. I’ve personally split a dinner order with a friend and still taken leftovers home. In an era where restaurant portions are shrinking nationwide-data from the National Restaurant Association shows average entrée sizes have decreased by nearly 12% over the past decade-this spot still delivers value without cutting corners.

The cooking process here sticks to tried-and-true methods. Proteins are cooked to order, vegetables retain their crunch, and sauces are prepared fresh throughout the day. Watching the open kitchen during slower hours, you can see the wok cooking in action, a technique widely respected by culinary experts for preserving texture and flavor when done correctly. Chefs trained in traditional Cantonese-style cooking often emphasize high heat and fast movement, and that approach shows up in dishes like beef with broccoli and shrimp fried rice.

Customer experience also plays a big role in why this place works. The staff is friendly without hovering, and phone orders are handled efficiently, which matters for takeout-heavy locations like this one. Many online reviews mention accuracy and speed, two factors consistently ranked by consumer research firm Technomic as top priorities for repeat restaurant visits. In my experience, orders have been correct every time, even during busy dinner rushes.

The location itself is practical and easy to reach, especially for locals running errands or grabbing a quick dinner on the way home. Parking is straightforward, and the dining area stays clean and comfortable, even during peak hours. While it’s not positioned as a trendy dining destination, it fills an important role in the community as a dependable, everyday option.

There are a few limitations worth noting. If you’re looking for highly regional Chinese cuisine or a modern fusion menu, this may not be the place. The focus is clearly on classic comfort dishes rather than experimental flavors. That said, for diners who want familiar tastes done well, that consistency is exactly the appeal.

People often describe the food here as fresh comfort food, and that phrase fits. Another regular I spoke with called it their go-to takeout spot, and after multiple visits, that sentiment feels earned. Between the reliable menu, generous servings, and steady service, this restaurant has carved out a solid reputation in Manitowoc that aligns closely with what most diners actually want from a local Chinese restaurant.

  • The food is absolutely delicious and the customer service is even better. I got home and realized my meal had chicken instead of shrimp. The food was so good it took a few bites to realize the discrepancy (and yes, I know the difference visually I was just so excited to eat it that it took a moment). I called in and without hesitation, they offered to make it right. I luckily live only a few minutes away so it wasn't a big deal to go back but my replacement was ready right away and they threw in an order of almond cookies (delicious). It's the best takeout place in town. You can't go wrong with any of the meals. I would not necessarily recommend for eating-in as it definitely lacks comfortable dine-in ambiance.
